Are You Shadow Savvy? Take the Quiz

Hi ,

A couple of weeks ago, I bought my first water pick.

I eagerly ripped open the box, set it up on my bathroom vanity, plugged it in, and set to making my teeth squeaky clean.

Within 5.2 seconds, not only were my clothes soaked, but my bathroom had splatters of water EVERYWHERE.... the walls, the floor, and the ceiling!

After I had a good laugh at myself about it, I said to myself, "Self, perhaps you should read the instructions."

Scrapbooking is similar to water picking.

If you don't stop and pay attention to your settings,

you're likely to end up with a big mess!

This week in Fundamentals, we've released a new video focusing on one such disaster: adding drop shadows to flat objects.

I Know How This Happens!

You get excited to finish your scrapbook page, so you quickly make sure all your layers are shadowed, and then you move on. But the problem is, not all layers SHOULD be shadowed.

How shadow savvy are you?? There are eight common scrapbooking parts shown above. Which of them should NOT have a shadow applied? Your choices are:

paint
word strip
journaling

stitches
overlay
tape

paper alpha
tag

I know, a couple of those are kinda tricky! But some of them should never...ever...ever-ever have a shadow applied. Which are they?

Answer to the Quiz!

Paint should never be shadowed. It's flat. You cannot even slip a fork under it. Leave it unshadowed.
The overlay is similar to paint, but it usually has varying degrees of opacity. Again, this type of element should never be shadowed.
Journaling should never be shadowed. Never. As in, never ever.
Is it possible you also picked the stitches and tape? These two elements are actually 3D in nature. You can grab them with a fork and they do stick up off the page...be it ever so slightly. Very small drop shadows should be applied to tape and stitches.
