Hi ,

My children are always running off and doing crazy things; this last weekend was no exception. I think I'll let my daughter, Allison, tell the story in her own words:

Have you ever had an adventure that turned out just a little too exciting?

My adventure was of the traditional variety. The goal: bushwhack into an area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, called "The Big Lava Bed," to an ancient crater with a meadow at the bottom. And here's the adventurous part -- there are absolutely no trails. At all.

Like many of us setting out on an adventure, I quickly realized (too late to quit, of course) that this particular task was a bit over my head (and current fitness level, more to the point).

WaterfallWell, when you're in the middle of an adventure and you find that you've gotten more than you bargained for, you only have two choices: you can quit, or you can buckle down and fight your way through.

By the time I stumbled out of the Big Lava Bed, I felt more like the bushes had whacked me rather than the other way around, but I had learned some valuable lessons:

1. I can't just decide never to try anything because it might be too hard.

2. Even if it's tough, I will find rewards I wasn't expecting. (Like my snapshot of an amazing waterfall -- isn't it a beauty?)

3. Next time I decide to do something crazy, at least I'll have the added experience from this time -- a better idea of both my own limits and also what I'm getting into.

I don't know if you're about to go out on any wild woods adventures like mine, but I bet you're going to have some adventure soon. Sometimes a project like scrapping a whole album with a looming deadline or cleaning out that overstuffed closet you've been avoiding is an adventure all in itself -- I hope it goes well for you.

- Allison
