Can Starbucks Increase Productivity?

February 18, 2014  |  Digital Scrapper News  |  Volume 12 Issue 07

Hi ,

How would you answer this question? When scrapbooking, I listen to . . .
1. blaring music. It distracts me from life--now I can relax!
2. the TV. It distracts me a little, and I get my shows in while I scrap.
3. classical music. It's less of a distraction and makes me feel creative.
4. complete silence. Leave me alone! Can't you see I'm concentrating?!?

I came across research the other day that suggested a moderate level of noise enhances creativity. Hmmm. In my house, "noise" is a dirty word, so I was skeptical. Then I kept reading.

As it turns out, noise gives our brain an obstacle to overcome, which in turn puts us on a higher level of abstract thinking. In other words, the gears start going, and we are on our way to creating World Peace--or at the very least, an interesting scrapbook page.

On the flip side, the researchers suggested that when our world is quiet, things are running smoothly so our brain goes into slow mode. There are no problems to solve--nothing to overcome--so the brain goes lazy and, therefore, less creative.

So, that was all great, but I'm still stuck on that "noise" issue. What constitutes a good noise? These research guys say its something between a slumber party and silence. Not too loud, yet not too soft. They suggest a coffee shop style noise--hushed conversations, swooshy noises, and an occasional squeaky floor.

So here's some food for thought. If you find your creativity level lacking, maybe you are living a little too high or a little too low in the noise department. Try hauling your laptop into the local Starbucks. It might be just what the doctor ordered.
